Ornaments requested for troops' tribute tree

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and first lady Tonette Walker invite family members of Wisconsin's service members - past and present, here and abroad - to send a holiday ornament dedicated to their loved to this year's "Tribute to our Troops" holiday tree.

The ornaments will be displayed on one of the large evergreen trees in the executive residence during December's holiday tours. They can be plain or fancy, as well as personalized.

The "Tribute to our Troops" tree will be decorated Nov. 20. Public tours that include it will be held noon-2 p.m. Dec. 4, 5, 11, and 12, and from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 7 and 14.

"The Christmas and holiday season is especially hard on our troops who are separated from their families," Gov. Walker said. "The 'Tribute to our Troops' tree is a wonderful way to remember our service members as they protect us here and abroad."

The governor and first lady invited as many families as possible of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guard members to take part in the event.

"Every year we're so fortunate to have the Executive Residence beautifully decorated with different themed trees by Wisconsin greenhouses and florists, but the "Tribute to our Troops" tree is my absolute favorite," Mrs. Walker said. "Loved ones sending an ornament to remember or honor their service member adds such a personal touch to the tree, and is a small, but important, gesture at this time of year."

Anyone who would like to participate should send an ornament no later than Nov. 15 to:

Wisconsin National Guard Service Member Support Division

ATTN: Airman 1st Class Cedar Hamilton
      2400 Wright Street
      Madison, Wis., 53704

      Ornaments will not be returned.
